NAFLD - MASLD affects 1 in 6 teenagers.
Could it be you?
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in teenagers. If you are overweight, or have PCOS, elevated blood sugar (diabetes), or abnormal cholesterol, you are at high risk. NAFLD is a silent disease often with few to no symptoms, therefore it can be hard to diagnose.

American Association for The Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) in 2023 acknowledged the need for "a new name and definition for the condition formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease" [...] "The name chosen to replace NAFLD was metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)." [...] The results of numerous surveys found "that the current nomenclature was sufficiently flawed." [..] "The terms ‘non-alcoholic’ and ‘fatty’ were felt to be stigmatising by 61% and 66% of respondents, respectively. Steatotic liver disease (SLD) was chosen as an overarching term to encompass the various aetiologies of steatosis." [...] "The new nomenclature and diagnostic criteria are widely supported, non-stigmatising and can improve awareness and patient identification."

The good news is that NAFLD/MASLD is reversible and can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle.
